Christina Hoff Sommers on Intersectional Feminism

Christina Hoff Sommers is a senior fellow emeritus at the American Enterprise Institute (AEI), where she studies the politics of gender and feminism, as well as free expression, due process, and the preservation of liberty in the academy. Before joining AEI, Dr. Sommers was a philosophy professor at Clark University. In addition to frequent radio and television appearances, Dr. Sommers is the host of the popular video blog, The Factual Feminist.

Dr. Sommers has a PhD in philosophy from Brandeis University and a BA from New York University.

Her worldview, you ask? In her own words:

That said, this 8 mn video is an excellent 30,000 ft view of intersectional feminism and shows, in a lighthearted but truthful way, where and how it breaks down. If you’re looking for a short, pithy question to ask at break time when discussing current events, this is one to watch.

Voddie Baucham on Social Justice and CRT

On matters of diversity, equity, race, gender, justice, and economics, is there any merit in critical race theory as an analytical tool, or is the criticism of CRT valid?

Voddie Baucham joins the Heritage Foundation to discuss CRT’s approach to the equity conversation, and points to Scripture as the greater standard by which we can relate to one another for unity over all our differences in this 43 minute video.

Sproul on a unique study tour as he explores the major themes, events, and people that are brought to life in the Bible. Dust to Glory provides a panorama of biblical truth and a starting point to help you understand the content of the Bible. Dust to Glorycan energize your study of the Bible, provide you with new insights, and improve your ability to read, understand, and apply Scripture to your life.

“I believe that Dust to Glory is the most important teaching tool Ligonier has produced,” says Dr. Sproul. “It is our prayer that it will serve you in your desire to grow in the knowledge and love of God. As Christians, we are called to be people of the Word. My hope is that Dust to Glory will encourage, stimulate, and assist you to master the Scriptures so that the Scriptures may master you.”

We hope to see you out at the dojo on Saturday morning! And many thanks to Ippon Dojo for graciously opening their doors to us.

No Papers Required

If you’re overwhelmed by the deluge of information back and forth about infectious disease, two Calgary doctors at the Children’s Hospital have addressed open letters with multiple pages of citations to the powers that be.

Given that we seem to be preparing for the force of mandates to come to roost on children, it may be helpful to see these letters of opposition as resources to establish facts before simply complying on behalf of a population, namely, said children, who cannot advocate in the public arena for themselves.

These papers are by no means exhaustive, though they will certainly help clarify where the debates lie, help build your vocabulary around this issue, and provide a road map to some studies.

It should also be noted that both doctors risked their reputations and careers by coming forward, contrasted with the multimillionaires who are being paid to push a narrative forward by force of their sponsors: our municipal, provincial, and federal governments. As with anything, it’s good to ask: who benefits? Or who owns the risk?

Worship in Spirit and Truth

Pastor, author, and educator Voddie Baucham recently addressed the G3 conference on the meaning of the word “worship”. The 15mn video below contrasts his words of concern about worship as performance or an obsession over appearances and passions with a sampling of clips from megachurch worship services.

The point, of course, is not to mock megachurches but to get us to consider how we might tend to fall into either category of “theology Christians” or “worshipping Christians”, and to see how correct theology is meant to shape, invite, and motivate us into truer, more genuine worship of the Trinity.

Lessons from the Reformation’s Pamphlet War

From Carl Trueman over at First Things, 11.4.21

“As a Protestant, I rejoice that the Reformers carried the day in many places, with their appropriate emphasis on biblical authority, divine grace, and the finished work of Christ. They recovered the gospel and paved the way for many of the freedoms we in the West now take for granted. But I am not naïve enough to believe that they won simply by force of argument. Few people would have had the background to understand the issues, and that would have applied to many subsequent debates, particularly regarding the real presence of Christ in the Lord’s Supper. Few members of the populace could actually read. So what made the Reformation a popular success in so many places?

One last thought: the Reformation, Protestant and Catholic, may have been fueled by pamphlets. But who, beyond a small group of scholars, reads those pamphlets today? To the rest of us they are, at best, the throwaway productions of a bygone age, at worst an example of the way in which human beings can treat each other with pride and venom and no concern for the truth. The works that really counted—Luther’s On the Freedom of a Christian, Calvin’s Institutes, Loyola’s Spiritual Exercises, Bellarmine’s Disputations—continue to shape how Christian leaders approach the faith and teach it to their congregations. And those writings could not be encapsulated in pamphlet form. There is a lesson there for those of us who have eyes to see.

What is the History of Scripture?

Author Jonathon Van Maren interviews Timothy Mahoney:

Mahoney travels around the Middle East and across Europe and America, interviewing archaeologists, scholars, and experts on evidence for the biblical Exodus, the authorship of the Pentateuch, and the location of the Red Sea crossing. These films are not just homeschooling curriculum videos designed to convey information—they are deeply investigative, featuring interviews with scholars who disagree on everything from the location of key places to whether or not certain events actually occurred. Mahoney does the heavy lifting, and the resulting films are extremely educational and very eye-opening.

Especially fascinating is the evidence Mahoney uncovers for the biblical narrative that I’d never come across before—such as his investigation into Hebrew sojourn in Egypt, for example:

A settlement of people was found under the ancient city of Rameses that matched the story of Joseph and his family arriving in Egypt. This evidence had previously not been linked to the Bible because it was from a level that was lower (or older) than what was expected for the Israelites. The settlement started as a few houses of foreigners from the north that were allowed by Egypt to live there – just as Pharaoh allowed Joseph’s family to come in and settle in Egypt. In the middle of this settlement was a Syrian-style house, which was the type of house used in the area of Haran where Joseph’s father Jacob, and his great grandfather Abraham came from. After a while, this house was flattened and on top of it was built a royal palace, however the occupant was not an Egyptian but a high official from the Canaan/Syria area who wore a multi-colored coat. Behind the palace was a cemetery with a pyramid tomb (something usually reserved for Egyptian royals) and 11 other major tombs. All of these discoveries matched the biblical account of Pharaoh rewarding Joseph for saving Egypt and Joseph and his 11 brothers dying and being buried in the land of Egypt. And this is just one of many pieces of evidence I’ve learned about that match the history recorded in the Bible.

Mahoney’s documentaries are packed with such stories, and combined with his BBC-quality on-site footage, his films are beautiful as well as educational.

Most recently, Mahoney released the documentary The 7 Churches of Revelation: Times of Fire by director Christophe Hanauer. Hanauer investigates the backdrop of the Book of Revelation, visiting the sites of the churches mentioned in Scripture. Having recently traveled to Turkey to visit Ephesus, Smyrna, and other Christian sites, the phenomenal footage Hanauer includes makes the documentary well worth the watch. To discuss this latest project, Tim Mahoney joined me to answer a few questions.

About Obedience

“This submission of wives to husbands doesn’t fit everything. It doesn’t fit a bitter heart, or a rebellious one. It doesn’t fit an egalitarian frame of mind and it doesn’t fit feminism. It doesn’t fit a cranky face. But it does fit the way God made the world.”

‘But I would have you know, that the head of every man is Christ; and the head of the woman is the man; and the head of Christ is God.’ – 1 Corinthians 11:3 (KJV)…

In Flanders’ Fields

BY JOHN MCCRAE
In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie,
        In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
        In Flanders fields.

And let us also remember and give thanks for the greatest source of true freedom: Christ himself.

“Greater love has no one than this, than to lay down one’s life for his friends.” (John 15:13)

“It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery.” (Galatians 5:1)
